Natural Resources, Steady Income
Campaign focusing on increasing annual income of households through sustainable livelihood creation for small and marginal farmers, and disadvantaged groups.
Many of the poor and vulnerable like the tribals, dalits, small and marginal farmers are either landless or have very small land-holdings. Their income from agriculture is low as they are not exposed to new agricultural technologies such as system of rice intensification, line sowing and organic farming. Their key challenge remains to find sustainable livelihoods within the available resources leading to steady incomes. In absence of sustainable livelihoods, they are forced to migrate to larger towns or cities for odd jobs and end up being exploited by having to put up with adverse living conditions and below par wages.
Our campaign, ‘Natural Resources, Steady Income’ focuses on increasing annual income of households through sustainable livelihood creation for marginalised farmers and disadvantaged groups through ecological agriculture, livestock management and smooth access to government schemes like the MNERGA.
▶ Support 1 Farmer’s participation in a Seed and Grain fair for better price realization and Seed exchange – Rs. 800
There are numerous traditional seeds varieties having medicinal and nutritive values available with farmers across locations. Some new varieties that can give higher yields are also developed by farmers like HMT paddy variety in Maharashtra. These seeds are also suitable to local climatic conditions. However, farmers from other places do not have sufficient information about these seeds and they solely depend on the seeds that are available in the market. Many a time they end up buying spurious seeds.
Your donation will partly contribute towards supporting a onetime event of a Seed Cum Grain Fair. Farmers from a district will be invited to participate in this fair and bring along their seeds and grains. In the fair the farmers will interact with each other and learn about the different traditional and improved seed varieties and their performance under different agro ecological conditions. They will also purchase good quality seeds. Consumers will also be invited to participate in the fair and will learn about the different types of seeds and grains grown in the region and purchase farmers produce.
The Local NGO will publicize the seed fair and invite farmers and consumers to participate in it. The NGO will select villages possessing different varieties of seeds and invite the farmers to participate. They will select a central venue convenient for both the farmers and consumers and make the necessary logistics arrangements for the fair.
AfC will work with our implementation partner which will be a local NGO having good know-how and local recognition to implement this project. AfC staff will help design the seed fair.
